  • Manchester United legend receives Honorary Doctorate of Science for Outstanding Contribution to Sport
  • University of Bolton honors Giggs for his footballing achievements

  • Ryan Giggs added yet another accolade to his glittering collection on Friday afternoon when he received an honorary doctorate at the University of Bolton.

United’s assistant manager, who retired from playing at the end of last season, accepted the award of Doctor of Science for Outstanding Contribution to Sport at a graduation ceremony at the town’s Victoria Hall.
Addressing hundreds of other graduates, the Reds legend said: "I’m proud to receive this. As a footballer you start out to win matches, trophies and medals, but you never think you’re going to be stood up here, wearing this cap and being honoured by a university.
"I was lucky enough to be blessed with a little bit of football talent but what got me through 20 years of playing for Manchester United was hard work.
"So if I were to give you any advice, it would be to work hard and try to enjoy it, whatever field or occupation you go into. Thank you and congratulations to everyone."
Giggs later told MUTV: "Not many people receive an honorary doctorate so I’m tremendously proud. I have great ties with Bolton: I lived here for a number of years and my kids go to Bolton School, so it’s a proud moment for me and my family."
